Noto, in the south-east of Sicily, in Italy, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the capital of Italian baroque. Its cathedral and the carved balconies of Palazzo Nicolaci draw visitors from all over the world. But Noto is also a coast: the nature reserve of Vendicari, the wide beach of San Lorenzo, and Calamosche, once voted the most beautiful beach in Italy. Nearby, Calabernardo is an old Sicilian fishing village with a small church on the rock, a tiny harbour, and coves where the houses look straight onto the water. A seafront walk leads to soft, fine sand. Here the sea is a deep luminous blue, and the Italian season never really closes, not even in winter.
